About me

Hi, I’m James Gray and I’m a qualified translator working from German to English. I’m a native English speaker based just outside Vienna, Austria, and as a freelance translator I’ve been helping companies, organisations and individuals with their translation, proofreading and editing needs since 2003.

I have a Bachelor’s in Modern Languages and Linguistics from the University of East Anglia, Norwich. As part of my degree I spent a year as a Teaching Assistant in Austria, trading Yorkshire for Burgenland dialect.

After finishing my B.A., I decided to focus on translation and completed a Master’s in Translation at the University of Surrey, Guildford, which set me up with the tools of the trade I practice today.

There followed a stint as a Deputy Editor / Translator with a Tunbridge Wells publishing house, but I soon found myself back in Austria, where I joined a Vienna software company as an In-house Translator and Translation Manager.

Now freelance, I enjoy the flexibility of working from home on the outskirts of Vienna and within stick-throwing distance of the Vienna Woods. My “colleagues” include our dog, Sienna, and two cats, Bonnie and Indie, who like nothing more than to pay me the occasional visit and trample all over the keb*ard.

I am a Qualified Member (M.I.T.I.) of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. On the journalistic side, I hold the British College of Journalism Diploma of Professional Freelance Journalism.
