About me

I’m James Gray, a qualified translator working from German to English. I’m a native English speaker based just outside Vienna, Austria, and as a freelance translator I’ve been helping companies, organisations, and individuals with their translation, proofreading, and editing needs since 2003.

I have a Bachelor’s in Modern Languages and Linguistics from the University of East Anglia, Norwich (UK). As part of my degree I spent a year as a Teaching Assistant in Austria, trading Yorkshire for Burgenland dialect.

After finishing my B.A., I decided to focus on translation and completed a Master’s in Translation at the University of Surrey, Guildford (UK), which set me up with the tools of the trade I practice today.

Following a two-year stint as a Deputy Editor / Translator with a Tunbridge Wells-based publishing house, I found myself back in Austria, where I joined a Vienna software company as an In-house Translator and Translation Manager.

Now freelance, I enjoy the flexibility of working from home on the outskirts of Vienna and within a stick’s throw of the Vienna Woods; my “colleagues” include our two dogs, Maggie and Becca, plus four very energetic cats.

I am a Qualified Member (M.I.T.I.) of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. On the journalistic side, I hold the British College of Journalism Diploma of Professional Freelance Journalism.
